Remember when you were a kid and you would hear some music and start dancing? Or when you just are happy, put on your favourite song, and start jumping around? Dance is powerful, it releases dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins which are the chemicals that are good for uplifting your mood.

Studies show that 7 minutes of dancing a day is beneficial for your mind, body, and soul. As well as being beneficial to the health of your body it also is a great exercise for your mind. Choreographed dance has proven to decrease memory loss with age. In fact, one specific study was taken place in a retirement home where the guests were divided into 3 groups. 1 group was assigned walking, the other stretching and mobility, and the last country dancing. Every group had to exercise 3 days a week for 1 hour for 6 months. The only group that had a change in their brain scans was the country dancing group, the area in the brain that controls memory improved significantly.

Free-flowing, conscious dance is now being used as a treatment for depression, anxiety, or a history of trauma given the positive mental benefits it has proven to have. Not only did dance improve their mental state and mood but it also gave them more confidence and compassion.

Some of the many mental health benefits of dancing are:

  • Increases endorphins
  • Improves self-esteem
  • Helps memory
  • Eases depression
  • Lowers anxiety
  • Reduces stress
